Single Event Effects

Electrical components are very sensitive to space environment and especially to particles such as electrons, protons or heavy ions. These particles can induce drifting effects of electrical circuits which are irreversible.

The damages scale depends on the deposited dose. High energy particles cause single event effects (SEE) which are characterized by a sensitivity threshold of the electrical component and by a probability of arrival. These SEE can cause logical errors in electrical components which, in turn, could induce the loss of the entire spacecraft.

It is thus important to model these effects in order to assess the spacecraft performances at the end of its life.
